The company’s first product for chemistry, Chem101, is currently adopted by faculty at over 200 colleges and universities across North America including University of California Irvine, James Madison University, Florida International University, and the College of Charleston. Why Contribute: Here are some testimonials from past awardees of Spark Grants:ġ01 - develops an active learning platform to drive student engagement and improve student outcomes in college STEM courses. Generally, Spark Grants are awarded on an as-needed basis. Students submit an application and finalists are expected to give an 8-minute presentation. The presentation can be given to staff, Olympus advisors, fund donors if local, experienced entrepreneurs, and/or investors.Īwardees are expected to meet at least monthly with Kit Needham, Entrepreneur in Residence, to report on progress, provide brief final written reports on milestones reached, issues experienced and other outcomes or progress made according to the timeframes specified in the application. Spark Grants are available only to active PrOBEs ( Project Oriented Business Explorations) that have developed a feasible business model, have demonstrated commitment to the business idea by consistently making progress toward milestones, and participated regularly in the Olympus program. One of the founders must be a current CMU student. Grants can be up to $5,000 where $3,000 is initially granted and if the proposed milestone(s) is reached, the student is eligible for the remaining $2,000. Examples of such purposes could be summer internship (most common request), attendance at a key conference or event to conduct customer discovery, purchase of market research, development of a specialty application or purchase of specialty equipment. Legal fees, basic research, as well as generic equipment such as a laptop are generally not eligible for Spark Grants. The purpose of the Spark Grant program is to help students achieve an important and meaningful milestone for their business. Participants in our program receive personalized one-on-one coaching, connections to almost 100 experts in 35+ fields, prioritized access to AWS, TiE, Hubspot and MathLab scholarships, priority to exhibit at various events, introduction to the press, and 24/7 access to the incubator space for all team members. Our goal is to teach all participants how to think more entrepreneurially by providing the tools and processes to successfully create a startup business. We help students, faculty and staff explore the commercial potential of their innovations and cutting-edge research. Project Olympus runs the start-up incubator program for Carnegie Mellon University.
